How to read a visualization research paper: extracting the essentials

  • aim: solved and unsolved problems
  • not necessary all the details: important guidelines
  • e.g. we write a Eurographics STAR (state-of-the-art report)

Concept versus Implementation

  • a given concept might have different implementations: critical thinking

Extracting the Essentials

focus on and write down this information:

The concept The implementation Related work Data characterristic
try to achieve what? what’s new ? how to realize? how to support their hyp? build on what previous work? dimension of data? temporal dimensionality?resolution and size?etc

other characterictics useful:

visualization techniques application domain
basic techniques used e.g. physics, eartch sciences, astronomy, biology, etc
  • important: how a paper relates to its predecessors: state this explicitly

Breadth versus Depth

  • breadth phase –> depth phase
  • multiple passes through a paper will be necessary
  • if not clear -> could query the authors
